Black soap with nothing added — no scent, no charcoal, no botanicals. Just the base recipe, milled hard so the bar lasts.

Highlights

Completely unscented — the version to buy if fragrance is the thing that usually rules a soap out for you, or if you use it on your face.
Triple milled and hard-pressed, so it outlasts a soft artisan bar by a wide margin at under three dollars.
Fair trade unrefined shea butter is the softening ingredient — it is what stops a saponified soap from feeling tight afterwards.
Sulfate-free, and Alaffia lists it as suitable for any skin type, including the most sensitive.

The method is the interesting part. Potash made from burnt plantain skins and leaves is added to hot shea butter and palm oil, cooked for about six hours, then the soap is cured in the sun for three weeks — which is where black soap gets its color and its texture. Alaffia's palm oil comes from small multi-crop farms in the Maritime region of Togo, between Tsevie and Kpalime, and is pressed by a cooperative in Sokodé; oil palms are native to West Africa and the orangutan-habitat problem associated with industrial palm plantations in Southeast Asia does not apply there. If you want the same base soap with something worked into it, the Charcoal & Reishi bar is the alternative.

One triple-milled bar. Unscented and sulfate-free. Made with fair trade unrefined shea butter and West African palm oil. Alaffia states it is suitable for all skin types, including sensitive. Store on a draining dish between uses. For external use only. Alaffia doesn't publish the bar's net weight or a full ingredient list for this style — message us before ordering if you need either.
