African black soap is a West African tradition, and Alaffia's version follows a centuries-old recipe from Togo — shea butter and palm oil saponified with potash, then cured. Alaffia sources the palm oil from small multi-crop farms in the Maritime region of Togo rather than from cleared-rainforest plantations. This is an easy way to try black soap before committing to a full-size liquid.
